Surreal Journey: Discovering Dali in Figueras
Strange that I was reading For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway while taking the train just north of Barca, to a town known as Figueras. The first thing I saw there was what I came for, the Salvador Dali museum. Befitting enough to the likely architect, the museum was adorned with none other than gigantic eggs! You can't quote me on this but eggs in Spanish and Latin cultures refers to courage, which you certainly can see in his work. Inside and beyond the eggs was the work of arguably the greatest surrealist we have seen. Melting clocks, a ton of mirrors, self-portraits. The artist was well represented here. I was slightly afraid to go to sleep that night for the dreams that may come from such an encounter as this!
My favorite work of his is a tiny man holding his son’s hand on a sea shore somewhere, pointing to one of 2 colossal statues. All that can be discerned from these figures is one appears to be sitting ala Rodin’s The thinker, and the other standing. The seated one appears to have gained the tiny companion’s attention. I like to think he is praying.
It is called "Archeological Reminiscence of Millet's Angelus" if you want to look it up...and you should. :)
